Sailing Association and Endowment

The Sailing Team is fortunate to have a very active and supportive Afterguard in the 150+ members of the Fordham University Sailing Association, which is composed of Alumni, Parents and Friends of Fordham Sailing. The Association spearheaded the resurrection of the Team in 2000 and currently is guided by a Board of Governors consisting of seven alumni.

The Sailing Association assists the team in a number of financial and non-financial ways, e.g., volunteering to serve as chaperones or host/chaperones at away regattas; providing recruitment leads to the coaching staff, serving as Race Committee, and assisting sailors to obtain internships and other employment opportunities.

Financially, in 2001, after the Team members raised $5,000 to buy one sailboat, alumni raised over $45,000, enabling the program to purchase six new 420’s and a 16’ Scout with a 40 HP, four-stroke engine to serve as a safety boat.

In 2002, the Board decided that Sailing, as a non-revenue generating sport, would need additional financial resources to ensure its viability for generations of Fordham sailors. To achieve its objective to become a nationally ranked program, boats and sails must be replaced periodically and funding must be available to engage the services of a professional coach.

In 2005, the Board initiated Phase I of a two-phase effort to create and build a $1 million Sailing Endowment. The goal was to raise $50,000, the minimum needed to establish an endowment, and within 90 days, that mission was accomplished. Phase II commenced in the summer of 2007 and as of June 2009, over $250,000 has been generated for the Endowment.

On May 7, 2010, the Sailing Association will host its 60/10 Anniversary Dinner to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the Association and the 10th Anniversary of the rebirth of the Sailing Team. Proceeds from the dinner will contribute to the purchase of a new fleet of 420-class sailboats.
