Alcohol and Other Drug Education Program

Prevention, education, and social programming are the three fundamental aspects of the Alcohol and Other Drugs Education (AODE) Program at Lincoln Center.  Each of the initiatives combines to form a comprehensive framework that engages others in the practice of prevention and strives to create a new norm of college behavior.  In other words, the goal of the AODE Program is to unite faculty, administrators, and students in creating an environment that fosters healthy lifestyles and reduces the potential risks associated with alcohol and drug abuse.

AODE is dedicated to the Jesuit tenet Cura Personalis by helping each student reach his/her potential, both academically and personally.  It is believed that the four years a student spends in college builds a foundation for career and involvement choices, as well as forming relationship networks.  This idea is at the core of the AODE Program’s prevention and intervention efforts.

Educational & Referral Services
The AODE Program is designed to provide individual and community targeted strategies that focus on the reduction of high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs.  Individual focused interventions provided by AODE include facilitating Screenings and Brief Interventions for students mandated for violating the University’s alcohol and other drug policy.  Similar services also include reflective exercises, personalized feedback sessions, and BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students).  Population targeted interventions include facilitating the freshmen core programming AODE session.  In addition, the AODE Program offers referral information regarding off-campus substance abuse treatment facilities and local support groups.

Screenings & Brief Interventions (SBI)
The AODE Program provides a variety of Brief Interventions for mandated clients.  Preceded by a Preliminary Screening and Placement Interview, these interventions are intended for students who have been mandated for violating the University’s alcohol and other drug policy.  These interventions are designed to enhance awareness and understanding of personal behaviors and perceptions related to substance use, and develop strategies to reduce the risks associated with alcohol and drug use.   Brief Interventions provided by an AODE staff member is not a treatment/rehabilitation program and does not follow the Twelve Steps philosophy.

Social Programming

Students play a vital role in the prevention effort. The PARty (Peers Advocating Responsibility) is the student organization responsible for campus awareness activities and programming with a distinct focus on healthy decision making moderation and social responsibility. PARty members also educate their peers using passive role modeling techniques as well as improvisational theater on various topics relating to alcohol and other drugs.

All students are invited to join PARty. Prominent programs sponsored by the AODE Program and/or PARty include: the Passport OC~NYC, an alcohol and drug-free off-campus guide to New York City; Oksoberfest, a week of alternative activities during mid October; and Passport Programming, monthly programs offering free activities out of the Passport OC~NYC to students.
