Audition Facts and Commonly Asked Questions:

Expressions will hold fall 2012 auditions on Friday, September 7th at 8:00pm in McGinley Ballroom.

The audition will include a short warm-up and center combinations in ballet, hip-hop, and modern. Although Expressions performs many styles of dance, you do not need to have extensive training in more than one style. We are looking for dancers with technical proficiency and the willingness to try new and different choreography. Dancers do not need to prepare any choreography for the audition.

Do I need to have previous dance training to audition for Expressions?
Typically, company members have extensive training in at least one style of dance. However, if you have never danced before, Expressions holds several open classes each week for beginners.

What should I wear to the audition?
There is no dress code for the audition. Wear anything that is comfortable to dance in, and allows us to see your lines. Don't be afraid to wear something that distinguishes you from the other dancers, such as a bright colored leotard or tank top!

Should I bring any dance shoes?
No dance shoes are required. Ballet, jazz shoes, or sneakers are optional.

Is there an audition fee?

There is no audition fee.

Does Expressions accept a specific number of dancers each semester?

No, Expressions does not have a quota of dancers we must accept each semester. However, the number of qualified applicants may exceed the number of dancers we are able to accept. We strongly encourage all dancers who are not accepted during their first audition to regularly attend Expressions' open classes and reaudition the next semester.

When will we be notified regarding the results of the audition?

You will be notified by email within 24 hours of the audition. If you do not receive an email within this timeframe, please email the account stating so.

How many hours a week do company members typically rehearse?
Company members rehearse one hour each week for every piece they are in. Generally, new members are placed in four to five pieces. In addition to rehearsals, company members are required to attend one company class each week, and are strongly encouraged to attend all optional classes.

Expressions produces one show each semester, but are there other opportunities to perform?
Yes, Expressions performs at several campus events throughout the semester. Usually, pieces from the current season’s repertoire are performed.

In addition to rehearsals and classes, are there other commitments Expressions requires?
Yes, because Expressions is a completely student run organization, we rely on company members to aid in publicity and fundraising. Our events coordinator also organizes events throughout the semesters, which are optional for company members.
