J1 Program Extension

In Section 3 of your DS-2019 form, you will find the "ending" date of the validity of your current DS-2019. You would use this date to determine exactly what D/S means. On your I-94 card and on the lower left corner of your DS-2019, you will find the notation "D/S" for the Duration of Status, the exact date to which you could remain in the U.S. legally. D/S is the "ending" date in Section 3 plus 30 days. For example, if your "ending" date is May 31, 2004, the D/S is June 30, 2004.

If you believe that you will need more time beyond the date in Section 3, BEFORE your current ending date notated in your Section 3 (we recommend at least 30 days before the "ending date"), make an appointment with the Director. At that meeting, please bring a letter from your academic advisor explaining, with specific reasons, why you need an extension and stating your new recommended prospective completion date. If you are requesting an extension beyond six months, the Director may request for additional financial documentation.
