About the Theatre Minor
The Theatre minor is recommended for students who want a strong, general education in Theatre while majoring with another department. A student can officially declare a theatre minor in his or her sophomore year only after declaring a major, as required by the dean.
The theatre minor consists of eight courses (all of which are also required for the major): Theatre Crafts, Visual Design, Acting I, Theatre History I, 2, 3, and two electives.
Both theatre minors and majors must start with either Theatre Crafts or Visual Design. If you’re a freshman, you will just take those two courses and your core during your freshman year.
If you’re a sophomore or junior, you can take Acting I (and Acting 2 if you wish, as a theatre elective) at the same time as Theatre Crafts and Visual Design (i.e. Acting I and Theatre Crafts first term and Acting 2 and Visual Design second term. Please keep in mind that Acting 2 is not required of theatre minors; it would count as one of your electives.)
Students interested in the performance major, will get the chance to audition (or re-audition – students are eligible to audition one more time if they auditioned previously and were not accepted) in the spring (late Feb. or early March) of either freshman or sophomore year. If you plan on taking Acting 2 as one of your theatre electives, it is advisable to wait until you are in Acting 2 to audition for the performance track so that you have as much training behind you as possible when you audition.
Theatre minors are required to do three terms of lab hours – 50 hours per term. In Theatre Crafts and Visual Design, these lab hours are part of your grade – you will be assigned a crew position, i.e. costume shop, electrics, publicity, etc.
Minors are eligible to audition for all studio shows--watch the bulletin board outside SL05 (the Blackbox studio theatre) for all notices.
Minors are also eligible to audition for the mainstage shows (after first term of freshman year) provided all lab hours are being completed as required.
Fordham Theatre minors will keep their faculty advisor in their major. However, Theatre minors may consult any Fordham Theatre Faculty member for advice regarding the theatre minor curriculum or other departmental questions.
