Theology Department
Our Mission
Our mission is to advance the critical and constructive study of the ideas, symbols, narratives, beliefs, and practices of religious traditions, with particular attention to the rich diversity of Catholic Christian theology. In the tradition of Jesuit education, we promote the informed exploration of faith and justice from ecumenical, interreligious, and global perspectives. We aspire to do so in an imaginative, interdisciplinary manner that values the important contributions of the humanities, arts, and sciences. We seek to foster theological study and dialogue for the academy, for ecclesial communities, and for the public sphere. Professors and students collaborate to cultivate an environment for undergraduate and graduate studies that prizes academic excellence, lively theological inquiry, and care for students’ intellectual and personal growth, with a view to the implications of learning for living.

Theology faculty member releases book
Professor Cristina L. H. Traina, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., Chair in Catholic Theology, published her book, Finitude, Feminism, and Flourishing: On Being Mortal, Like Everyone Else through Paulist Press in March 2024. In her latest work, Prof. Traina argues that "the divine gift of finitude means that we cannot flourish without each other." "Flourishing is embodied, messy, interdependent, tragic, joyful, always a work in progress—and our common calling."
Dr. Traina is a Professor in Fordham University's Theology Department in the area of ethics, with foci on critical and constructive Christian feminist ethics and a specialty in Catholic ethics. Areas of special expertise include sexuality, ethics of relationship, methodological questions, and moral agency, in particular children’s moral agency. Dr. Traina has additional interests in bioethics, migration, intersectionality, and economic and political justice. She is an active member of the Catholic Theological Society of America, the America Academy of Religion, and Societas Ethica.
