Convening, Consulting, and Advocating for Renewal and Reform and Telling and Preserving the Stories of Survivors
The Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life and the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs at Georgetown University will continue working with the Catholic community, Jesuits, survivors, and the lay public to inform, educate, and foster institutional change through a two-pronged approach. The first prong—Educating, Consulting, and Advocating for Renewal and Reform—will focus on reform through public education efforts, including events and media outreach, as well as through consultation with Church leadership on paths forward. The second prong—Telling and Preserving the Stories of Survivors—will focus on reform through the perspective of survivors, collecting their stories and experiences and assessing the best use of those materials to educate members of the Jesuits and all of their apostolic institutions.
John Carr is the founder and director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University. He served for over 20 years as director of the Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He previously served as Secretary for Social Concerns for the Archdiocese of Washington under Cardinal Hickey, Executive Director of the White House Conference on Families under President Carter, and Director of the National Committee for Full Employment under Coretta Scott King. John has also served as a Washington columnist for America and a Residential Fellow on religion and politics at the Institute of Politics of Harvard University. At Georgetown, John is an adjunct professor of theology and a member of the Committee on Investments and Social Responsibility (CISR). He is a member of the Board of the Law School of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota; a founder of the Circle of Protection which advocates for low-income families; and serves as Chair of the Board for Bread for the World. John is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.
Kim Daniels is the associate director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University. Kim partnered with the Initiative to help lead the Convening on Overcoming Polarization in June 2018 and is a key contributor to all Initiative programs. A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Chicago Law School, Kim was appointed by Pope Francis as a Member of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication in 2016. Most recently, she has been asked to assist one of the five working groups for the Vatican’s new COVID-19 Commission. She is also a consultor to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty and has been a lead advisor to the U.S. bishops and Catholic organizations on issues where Church teachings intersect with public life, including immigration, human life and dignity, religious liberty, and care for creation.
Fr. Gerard J. McGlone, S.J., is a senior research fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs. Previously he was an assistant professor of psychiatry in Georgetown University's School of Medicine. Most recently, he was the associate director for protection of minors for the Conference of Major Superiors of Men. He was also recently the chief psychologist and the director of counseling services, as well as faculty and staff psychologist, at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He has been executive director at several major treatment centers for clergy and religious in the United States-Saint John Vianney Center and Guest House, Inc. He is the lead author of numerous chapters, articles, and books, including Creating Safe and Sacred Places (Saint Mary’s Press, 2003) and Catholic Press Award winner The Inner Life of Priests (Liturgical Press, 2012). McGlone is also the lead author of three nationally acclaimed sexual abuse prevention programs for religious and clergy: Instruments of Hope and Healing, Conversations That Matter, and Critical Conversations. He has been a liaison and consultant with the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, the Vatican Commission for the Protection of Minors, and many other religious orders and dioceses.
