CPS Pre-Doctoral Psychology Externship
CPS offers a nine-month pre-doctoral externship at both our Rose Hill and Lincoln Center offices that commences in August 2021. The externship provides a comprehensive training experience in university mental health with an emphasis on short-term individual therapy, group therapy, and outreach to a diverse undergraduate and graduate population of approximately 15,000 students. Clinical work and training are conducted primarily from a psychodynamic framework but we integrate and are open to utilizing other treatment models. The externship requires a commitment of 16 hours per week. Externs are expected to maintain an active caseload of 10-12 individual psychotherapy clients and may have the opportunity to co-lead a psychotherapy group. They will also be expected to participate in outreach events.
Externs will receive 1 hour of weekly individual supervision with a staff psychologist, and will be provided with additional supervision for co-leading groups and developing/implementing
outreach activities. The externship also includes a weekly three-hour formal training component on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that consists of a case conference, a group supervision, a seminar on psychotherapy theory and process in the Fall semester, and a multicultural seminar in the Spring semester.
We accept doctoral students from APA-accredited programs in clinical, school, and counseling psychology and Masters students. We work with externs at different levels of training. Completed applications, which include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript (unofficial is fine), and two letters of recommendation, should be uploaded to the NYNJADOT externship portal. For Masters students who do not have access to the NYNJADOT website, feel free to send your application to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please share your campus preference (LC/RH/or both) in your cover letter or the subject of your email.
