Meet the Tutors

For the Summer of 2020, FCRH is offering tutoring for all Fordham undergraduates enrolled in summer classes. Below, meet our wonderful departmental tutors.

Rachel Daso

What do you like about tutoring?: My favorite part about tutoring is celebrating with my tutees when their hard work pays off and they do really well on a project or an exam. 

Fun fact: I play the trombone. 

 

Samantha Muller

Department: Biological Sciences

Major: General Science w/ a minor in Spanish

Hometown: Troy, New York

What do you like about tutoring?: I like meeting other students.

Fun fact: I studied abroad in London and Granada! 

 

Nathaniel Singh

Department: Biological Sciences

Major: Integrative Neuroscience

Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska 

What do you like about tutoring?: My favorite thing about tutoring is seeing how people studying the same topic can come from such diverse backgrounds.

Fun fact: I speak French

 

Margaret Whalen

What do you like about tutoring?:  I like how students push me to think about and teach concepts in new ways as much as I teach them.

Fun fact: I have been a vegetarian for 14 years.
 

Katy Belcher

What do you like about tutoring?: I really enjoy getting to help people learn something, while also getting to review myself!

Fun fact: In my free time, I love to perfect my french patisserie skills and I'm teaching myself to watercolor right now.

 

Lucy Hart

What do you like about tutoring?: My favorite thing about tutoring is working with students to develop strategies to better understand concepts they are struggling with.

Fun fact: In addition to tutoring, I also enjoy doing theatre on campus!

 

Julia Mayes

Department: Chemistry 

Major: Chemistry w/ a minor in Environmental Studies.

Hometown: Hampton Falls, New Hampshire

What do you like about tutoring?: What I like most about tutoring is meeting new people and seeing them improve in their course as they put in work. It is especially exciting to see students have an "Aha!" moment when a concept finally clicks for them.

Fun fact: One of my dogs likes to stand like a human. 

 

Winsor Tse

What do you like about tutoring?: I love tutoring because I love sharing knowledge and meeting new people.

Fun fact: I love chocolate.

 

Destin Piagentini

Department: Computer Science 

Major: Computer Science w/ a minor in Creative Writing

What do you like about tutoring?: My favorite part about tutoring is helping others appreciate programming like I do. 

Fun fact: I really love dogs and have four of my own (3 of them being Siberian Huskies)!

Hometown: I come from Vietnam but I have been in the U.S for more than four years now.

What do you like about tutoring?: What I like most about tutoring is that I get to meet and interact with people by helping them out. Helping others out also helps me to remember the stuff that I tutor on.

Fun fact: I once took the wrong train upstate, it didn't stop at Fordham and took me all the way to Stamford, took me like two hours to get back. But I learned something new!

What do you like about tutoring?: My favorite thing about tutoring is showing students that math isn't scary.

Fun fact: White chocolate is my favorite kind of chocolate.

 

Xiaoyurui Wang

Department: Mathematics 

Major: M.S.T in Adolescent Mathematics

Hometown: Beijing, China Dublin, Ireland Yerevan, Armenia (I consider all 3 to be my hometown)

What do you like about tutoring?: When a student finally gets it after a long struggle.

Fun fact: I am currently trying to get into professional chess.

 

Evan Madrid

Major: Engineering Physics

What do you like about tutoring?: When it comes to tutoring, my favorite feeling is getting my student to the point where they get all the concepts and patterns and start to comfortably sail through the rest of their problems. It's very rewarding to me.

Fun fact: I went camping near the Andes mountain range in the mideast of Chile.

 

Amelia Antzoulatos 

Department: Modern Languages and Literatures

Major: Economics & Theology

What do you like about tutoring?: Coming up with new but succinct models for helping students understand a tricky topic.

Fun fact: I'm also fluent in Greek!

 

Domenic Setaro

Department: Modern Languages and Literatures

Major: International Political Economy and Romance Languages

What do you like about tutoring?: I enjoy sharing my passion for foreign languages with my students.  Through tutoring, I am able to help others, while practicing what I love, and few things are more rewarding than that!

Fun fact: I have been to 28 different countries. 

 

Marla Hasin

What do you like about tutoring?: What I like most about tutoring is the ability to meet new people and learn from them because every time I connect with a student, I am challenged to think about a particular text or philosopher from a different perspective.

Fun fact: I have been to over 20 different countries.

 

Xinqiao Zhang

What do you like about tutoring?: My favorite part about tutoring is being able to reduce the level of anxiety that someone might feel about a subject.

Fun fact: I love to draw.

 

Yosef Uy 

Department: Physics

Major: Engineering Physics w/ a concentration in Mechanical Engineering

Hometown: Spanish Harlem in Manhattan, New York.

What do you like about tutoring?: What I like most about tutoring is that moment when a student finally understands how to do the problem that they came asking for help with, and then consequently understands how to solve similar problems with minimal to no help from me.

Fun fact: I like to run.

 

Mariadolores (Loli) Alvarez 

Department: Psychology 

Major: Psychology and Theology 

Hometown: Astoria, Queens but I have a strong root in my family’s hometown in Galicia, Spain.

What do you like about tutoring?: What I like most about tutoring is the sharing of ideas and thoughts that happens in a tutoring session.

Fun fact: I have a second degree black belt in taekwondo. 

 

Carlos Orbegoso

Hometown: Lima, Peru

What do you like about tutoring?: Seeing people leave tutoring feeling confident about themselves.

Fun fact: I walked into the middle of a protest without knowing and ran into the President of Peru and his cabinet.
