Lincoln Center Senior Position

The Department of Mathematics of Fordham University seeks to hire an outstanding mathematician at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, to be based primarily at our Lincoln Center campus and to begin in the fall of 2020.

We seek a scholar who has demonstrated success in teaching and mentoring undergraduates, who has established a productive and original research program and who is prepared to assume administrative roles and become a leader in the life of the Department.

Candidates in all areas of pure and applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in candidates who can increase the diversity of our faculty and curriculum, whose specialties give promise of leading to joint research projects with our current faculty, who have applied their work in collaborations with researchers in non-mathematical disciplines, who can strengthen our joint Mathematics/Computer Science major, or who have a record of achievement in outreach programs both locally and nationally.

Position specific desiderata for candidates:

Following a wave of recent retirements and a few unexpected departures, especially at our Lincoln Center campus, Fordham's Mathematics Department finds itself with a shortage of senior faculty and seeks a new senior member who is able and willing to provide it with leadership over the coming decade.  We are seeking someone who can move in to the role of Associate Chair at Lincoln Center, where duties include advising majors and students in our service courses about their programs, mentoring junior faculty and instructors, and scheduling courses; and who is interested in the opportunity to move to the Rose Hill campus to serve a term as Department Chair in the near future.

How we plan to organize our search:

We want to encourage applications for our position from as many mathematicians as possible, particularly those who are not actively seeking positions at this time and do not have current letters of reference, which is why our posting asks initially only for a cover letter and CV.

We will assess all applications as they are received and members of our staffing committee will conduct remote interviews with all those who have the qualifications that we seek. Based on this first review, particularly well-qualified finalists will be asked to provide us with a fuller narrative reviewing their research, teaching and mentoring qualifications and with any other materials that support their candidacies. Since our University Statutes mandate that any offer of a tenured position is conditional on a successful internal tenure review, candidates must also indicate willingness to undergo such a review if nominated. We are highly confident, but cannot be completely certain, that this review will be positive.

The next stages, assuming at each that there is there is mutual interest in proceeding, will be a campus visit so we can meet you in person and so that you can learn more about Fordham and our Department, a decision by the full Department on an offer, the negotiation of mutually acceptable terms for a provisional offer, and, finally, our internal tenure review. The nominee will be asked to select up to three evaluators and we will seek additional independent evaluations, giving the nominee the option of vetoing up to three evaluators. A tenure package consisting of these evaluations together with the nominee's narratives, CV and cover letter will then go through our review process. Longstanding University practice is to announce all tenure decisions on our statutory deadline, May 15, but we expect to be able to inform the nominee and provide a formal contract substantially earlier.
