English Master of Arts (MA)

Fordham University's M.A. in English program features seminars in English and American literature in the full range of periods and genres. Enrollment in the program may be full- or part-time.

Program Basics

Of the ten courses, one, either Research Methods or Critical Theory, is mandatory.

  • Either Research Methods or Critical Theory (3 credits)
  • Five Literature Courses in each of five historical areas (15 credits)
    • Before 1485 (British 1)
    • British literature, 1485-1800 (British 2)
    • British literature after 1800 (includes Irish and post-colonial) (British 3)
    • American literature before 1900 (American 1)
    • American literature since 1900 (American 2)
  • Three (3) Elective Courses (9 credits)
  • For students who enter the program in the fall 2018 semester (and following), at least one course that fulfills the Difference and Intersectionality requirement (indicated by the designation "DI").
  • MA Capstone Writing Project (3 credits)
  • Reading Knowledge of One Foreign Language (0 credits)
