Incoming/Transfer JD Students
Incoming and transfer JD students are encouraged to review carefully the following financial aid procedures. Should you have any questions, please contact our office and we will be happy to assist you.
Fordham's Merit Scholarships: The Admissions Committee considers every applicant, regardless of citizenship status, for a merit-based scholarship. No separate application is necessary to be considered for a merit-based scholarship. Those selected for a merit award will be notified by the Financial Aid Office via email. Transfer students are not eligible for these merit scholarships.
Fordham's Need-Based Grants and Need-Based Scholarships: Incoming and transfer students are eligible to apply for Fordham Law’s need-based grants and scholarships. These grants and scholarships range between $2,000 and $20,000 annually. To be considered for a need-based grant or scholarship, students must complete Fordham’s Financial Aid Application on the password-protected admitted students' website. Transfer students will not have access to this website and may obtain the Fordham Law Financial Aid Application by emailing the Financial Aid Office at email@example.com. Students are advised to complete Fordham's Financial Aid Application soon after acceptance to the Law School.
Federal Student Loans: Loans through the Department of Education are available to students who meet the Federal Student Aid eligibility requirements. Eligible students should complete the following steps to secure their federal loans:
- Complete the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming academic year. Fordham’s Title IV School Code is 002722. (The FAFSA must be filed every year that you apply for financial aid. Be sure you are completing the form for the academic year for which you are seeking aid.)
All additional steps are available on LawNet. Students who choose to attend Fordham will be notified by the Financial Aid Office when it is time to complete the remaining loan documents. Please note that the process is all online and can be completed within 30 minutes.
Private Loan Application Procedures: To apply for a private education loan, you must apply directly with the lender of your choice. Before deciding upon a lender, carefully review the interest rates, fees, deferment availability, repayment options, etc., offered by each lender in order to find the lender that best serves your needs. Questions to ask prospective lenders and other things to consider when considering a private loan may be found in the Financial Aid Guidebook. Remember, if you are planning on a career in public/government service, private loans cannot be included in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
Congress has mandated that private loan lenders require borrowers to complete a Private Education Loan Applicant Self-Certification Form when requesting a private education loan. Borrowers must complete the form and send it to the lender with the private loan application. Your cost of attendance and estimated financial aid for the academic year are needed to complete Section 2 of the form. This information is available in the Financial Aid section at my.fordham.edu. To access your account, log on to my.fordham.edu using your AccessIT ID and password and click on the financial aid login. Then click on the “Awards” tab. Listed there will be your total budget for the academic year and your estimated financial aid for the year. You will be required to fill in the difference between these two figures on line C of the Self-Certification form.
The Financial Aid Office reserves the right to request verification of information provided on the FAFSA or any document submitted to Fordham.
