Professional Value Formation and Moral Outlook of Future Lawyers at Law School, as Trainees and in their First Year of Practice
Empirical studies provide fresh insight into how ethical acuity develops. These papers provide insights at three points along the path to the practice of law: law school, vocational training and the first year in practice. Richard Moorhead reports on a large quantitative study of law students (in the US, England and Wales) examining their values, and professional and moral outlooks. He explores whether ethicality degrades over time and factors predicting differences in moral outlook. Freda Grealy examines the effectiveness of an intervention course at vocational training level (in Ireland) that explicitly foregrounds professional values and moral development. She considers whether resulting ethical professional identity is increased and assessable. Foley, Holmes, Tang & Rowe report on a quantitative study examining the perceptions of lawyers new to practice (in Australia) as to what professionalism means, whether they see themselves as professionals, and the influence of a their workplace culture in developing/stymying professional values.
