Safe Birthday Campaign

Fordham safe birthday

Beginning in September 2009, the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention and Student Support at Rose Hill formally implemented the OSAPSS Safe Birthday Campaign. With the assistance of the Office of Student Leadership and Community Development, Office of Residential Life and the Fordham Peer Educators, the Safe Birthday Campaign addresses high-risk drinking birthday celebrations by first-year students and students turning twenty-one.

Students receive a card prior to their birthday that contains self protective strategies (safe drinking tips), a personalized message (from their Resident Assistant, Commuter Assistant or Peer Educator) and a list of popular locations in New York City to celebrate without drinking alcohol.

If you are interested in learning more about the campaign and the current evaluation conducted by OSAPSS, contact us at osapss@fordham.edu.

For some fun ways to celebrate your birthday, visit our Passport Guide to New York City or stop by OSAPSS, located in the lower level of Alumni Court South, to pick up a copy while supplies last.

Protective Strategies

Safe Drinking Tips for Your Birthday!

If you decide to drink, keep it moderate.

Eat before and while you drink.

Sip from your drink.

Never accept a drink from someone you do not know.

Use alcohol cautiously when taking medication.

Don't drink and drive-have a plan for getting home.

Stay with people you know and trust.

Space your drinking.

Only accept a drink if you really want one.

REMEMBER!: Just because it is your 21st birthday DOES NOT mean you have to drink! You make the rules for yourself.
