The Communication and Media Studies department offers students a limited number of scholarships, and encourages them to seek out additional scholarship opportunities.

Fordham College Alumni Association Journalism Scholars Award

The Fordham College Alumni Association Journalism Scholars Award 

This $1,500 award, intended as a stipend for a student who undertakes (and completes) an unpaid summer 2020 internship in the field of journalism, will be presented to a Fordham College junior or senior who demonstrates outstanding interest and promise in becoming as a journalist. The recipient will have a knowledge of journalism, experience reporting and writing, and an interest in pursuing a career in the field. He or she will also have secured an unpaid internship for summer 2020. Applications will be judged on presentation, content, writing skill and experience to date. This award will be awarded by May 1, 2020.

The application will consists of: 

  1. A cover note to the award committee detailing your credentials for this award and a description of the internship you have secured for summer 2020.  Include your inspiration to study journalism, your experience doing so to date and your aspirations for the future. Also include contact information (name, address, phone, email, date of birth) and the internship workplace name, name of supervisor and time commitment required. 
  2. A resume containing education and work experience, most notably any previous internships or paid positions related to journalism.
  3. A sample of (up to three) stories written by you and published by a college or professional media outlet. PDFs or links accepted. For large video or audio files, save to google drive and share with


During your internship, you will be required to submit a mid-term and final report, signed by your supervisor, confirming that you have met the requirements of the position.  


The first half of the award ($750) will be remitted upon announcement of the award. The second half ($750) will be presented upon FCAA receipt of the mid-term report.

Thomas Kavanaugh Scholarship

Funded by a generous bequest of Thomas Kavanaugh, a graduate of the University’s undergraduate School of Education, this scholarship is intended to help an exceptional CMS student cover the cost of tuition during his/her senior year. It provides up to $20,000.00.

Applicants must be Communication and Media Studies majors in their junior year of study and are required to submit an essay, recommendations, and present a short speech to a panel of judges.

Edward A. Walsh Scholarship

The Walsh Scholarship is awarded in honor of Professor Edward A. Walsh, an outstanding teacher and mentor in the Communication and Media Studies department at Fordham University for more than 25 years. It is intended to help cover the cost of tuition for a student who is planning a career in communications (approximately $20,000).

Applicants for the scholarship must be junior-year Communications and Media Studies major at Rose Hill and Lincoln Center, with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Applicants are required to submit work samples, an essay, and recommendations. Submissions are judged by a panel of industry professionals.

Herbert A. Robinson Award in Creative Writing

The Herbert A Robinson Award is for students pursuing any type of creative production, including but not limited to: writing for television, film, or radio, poetry, plays, and short stories.

Amount: $500.00

Applicants are required to submit three copies of a short story, poetry, a play, a film script, or a television script (submit only one item). The winning entry will be selected by three judges from the Department of Communication and Media Studies. Applications may be submitted from both Rose Hill and Lincoln Center majors.

Casey Feldman Award

This award is to provide the recipient with $3,000 of financial support while he or she takes advantage of an unpaid internship in communications. Documentation of the internship must be provided before the funds are released. This scholarship is made possible by the Casey Feldman Memorial Foundation (

Applicants must be Communication and Media Studies majors in their junior or senior year of study and are planning to work at an unpaid internship in Spring 2018. Applicants are required to submit an 1-2 page essay that details their needs.
