Any employee who interfaces and engages across social norms within in-tact groups or multigroup work settings.
"We are so powerfully guided by the things we expect to be true in the world," says Brian Welle, director of people analytics at Google. At times, such bias prohibits interpersonal interactions and desired work results. Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one’s tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing.
Unconscious bias is far more prevalent than conscious prejudice. Certain scenarios can activate unconscious attitudes and beliefs. For example, biases may be more prevalent when multi-tasking or working under time pressure. It is important to note that biases, conscious or unconscious, are not limited to ethnicity and race. Though racial bias and discrimination is well documented, biases may exist toward from any social group. One’s age, gender, gender identity physical abilities, religion, sexual orientation, weight, and many other characteristics are subject to bias.
In this highly engaging workshop, knowledge transfer methods provide unconscious bias understanding along with interactive exercises to help bridge the gap that can exist between people of different backgrounds and viewpoints. We begin with a pre-class assessment to understand our own personal preconceptions and assumptions. We work to bring differences among people to a meeting place in the middle with a better understanding of one another. Our ultimate goal is to empower employees to create a productive work environment that promotes problem solving and collaboration.
