The Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education’s advanced certificate in supervision offers experienced spiritual directors formation in the art and practice of supervision, along with a process for discerning a call to supervision ministry.
Graduates of this program will be prepared to offer supervision across ministerial settings and collaborate with others in the formation and ongoing care of spiritual directors and other pastoral ministers.

About the Program Director
Maria Tattu Bowen, Ph.D.
Program Director
Professor Maria Tattu Bowen designed, directs, and teaches GRE’s advanced certificate in supervision program.
Co-founder of Together in the Mystery, a supervision training program for spiritual directors offered throughout the U.S. and in Ireland, Professor Bowen is also enriched by decades of experience forming spiritual directors in a variety of diverse, multicultural, and interfaith contexts.
The grace of receiving her own spiritual direction formation in a Jesuit university, a program that began with the Ignatian exercises in the long retreat format, continues to inform Professor Bowen’s spirituality, teaching, and writing. In the classroom, she offers warm hospitality while teaching a compassionate, contemplative, evocative form of supervision that cultivates a felt sense of experiencing God in all things.
Professor Bowen lives in San Luis Obispo, California, where the majestic coastline, volcanic hills, and sweeping dunes invite her into a deep and sustaining relationship with the natural world that grounds and informs her ministry.
In addition to teaching and meeting with directees and supervisees, Professor Bowen is writing a book on the Together in the Mystery model of supervision.
