Information for Incoming First-Years

All FCRH students complete a liberal arts core curriculum that is designed to develop critical thinking, clear expression, scientific understanding, an awareness of historical perspective and contemporary challenges, and an appreciation of religious, philosophical, and moral values.

Core Advising Program

The FCRH Core Advising Program meets the unique advising needs of first and second year students. It embodies the University’s commitment to cura personalis—the care of the whole person. All FCRH first-years participate in the Core Advising Program. Towards the end of the summer, incoming students are enrolled in an advising section; they do not self-register for one.

Registration Information

Incoming FCRH first-years self-register for their Fall 2017 courses using extensive guidance from their Summer First-Year Academic Coordinator (SFAC), their DegreeWorks web-based curriculum checklist, their responses on the required First-Year Survey, online placement tests, and a series of required video tutorials housed on Blackboard.

Pre-Health Advising Program

Students who plan to participate in the Pre-Health Program (pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-veterinary, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant, etc.) should specify their interest in this program in the First-Year Registration Survey. Pre-Health Program participants will be given the appropriate Degree Works registration guidance, which includes majors-level biology and chemistry courses, as well as the Pre-Health Symposium.

Pre-health is not a major and students who are interested in pursuing this program are encouraged to major in the subject of their choice while completing pre-health studies.

Students participating in the Pre-Health Program are strongly encouraged to consider living in the Science Integrated Learning Community (SILC) inside Alumni Court South.

Placement Exams

Incoming students who intend to take French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, or Spanish to satisfy the language requirement must take an online placement exam. Information regarding the language placement exam will be sent from the Office of Academic Records during the month of May. Students who intend to take Arabic, modern Hebrew, Japanese, Latin, or Ancient Greek will be placed appropriately by the Office of Academic Records and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. Your Degree Works guidance will inform you of which level you should take.

All entering Fordham College at Rose Hill students who intend to major in a STEM field (biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, integrative neuroscience, mathematics, physics, engineering physics, psychology, or any other closely-related science program) as well as all students who are interested in a pre-health program of study (regardless of intended major) must complete the math placement test.

Transcripts and Test Scores

Transfer students, as well as incoming students who wish to receive credit for AP and IB exams should make sure that official scores are sent to Fordham as soon as they are available. Transfer students must have a separate AP/IB score report sent directly to Fordham by the testing institution. Fordham's College Board CEEB code is 2259.

Students who have taken college courses while in high school should 1) review the criteria Fordham uses to accept them on the First-Year Registration Survey, 2) ensure that official transcripts and supporting documentation are sent directly to Dean Parmach (441 East Fordham Road, Keating Hall, Room 302, Bronx, NY 10458; as soon as possible.

Academic Orientation

Academic Orientation will be held on Monday, August 28. In the morning, Rev. James Martin, S.J., noted Jesuit author and Editor at Large of America Magazine, will welcome the Class of 2021.

In the afternoon, all first-year will meet with their assigned Core Advisors (academic year advisors) to discuss any add/drop course concerns, which students are able to make themselves through My.Fordham. FCRH students in the Manresa Scholars Program will attend a cohort advising session led by the Dean's Office and all Manresa Program faculty members.

Students in special academic programs will also have the opportunity to meet with faculty and advisors of those programs in a series of mid-morning meetings.

At the end of the day, the Class of 2021, along with members of the faculty, will come together for First-Year Convocation, a ceremony celebrating students’ investiture into the academic community. Please note that the First-Year Convocation is a formal event; business casual attire is expected. As there will be a limited amount of free time prior to the Convocation, students (especially commuters) should plan accordingly.

Special Academic Programs

The Manresa Program
The newly-renovated Loyola Residential College is home to approximately 130 first-year Fordham College at Rose Hill (FCRH) and Gabelli School of Business (GABELLI) students in the Manresa Scholars Program. Loyola Hall houses classrooms that are equipped with SMART technology, a kitchen, study nooks, event space, and the St. Ignatius of Loyola Chapel.

Manresa students are enrolled in a course taught by one of Fordham's most talented professor-scholars. Each professor also serves as the academic advisor and intellectual mentor to each student. The Science Integrated Learning Community
The Science Integrated Learning Community (SILC), located in Alumni Court South, is available to first-year science majors and pre-health program students. Residents of this community receive support and peer mentoring from the science-major resident assistants and peer tutors living in their dorm. SILC brings together those students who are enrolled in science courses and want to quickly find a support network among their peers. Residents engage in science-related activities and participate in events focused on concerns of first-year science students. Learn more about the Science Integrated Learning Community.

To be eligible for SILC, students must be a science or math major, or a participant in the Pre-Health Program.
