Title of Research: Dance as a Tool for Empowerment
Mentor: Dr. Edward Bristow
Abstract: My project aimed to use dance to create a safe environment for self-expression for children and teens in New York City. A curriculum taught online over four weeks during summer 2020 encouraged students to develop confidence, collaboration skills, and tools for effective self-expression, enabling them to move forward with a stronger sense of self and pride in their own gifts and talents. The curriculum was tailored towards the needs and abilities of students at People’s Theatre Project in upper Manhattan during a difficult time of isolation. The curriculum will be presented in tandem with related research on dance education in underserved communities and video clips of the online classes.
