Ethics, Social Justice & Health Equity Summer Faculty Research Grants

The Center for Ethics Education will award up to two summer faculty research grants, conducted during Summer 2022. Funding of up to $7,500 will support research projects or the development of grant applications that contribute to advancing the common good through research promoting and protecting the dignity of persons, increasing health equity for marginalized populations, reducing stigma and social injustice, increasing moral understanding and collective moral action, or enhancing the responsible conduct of science, health, and social services.

  • DEADLINE EXTENDED: Applications are due February 1, 2022.
  • Awards will be announced March 15, 2022 and funds will be available June 1, 2022.

Funding

  1. Grants of up to $7,500 will be awarded.
  2. Grant funds can support faculty costs for new research projects, supplement existing projects, or pilot data or other support for the development of an external grant proposal.
  3. Up to $2,500 of the grant may be paid as a one-time stipend to the awardee or divided among faculty co-investigators.
  4. Remaining grant funds can be used to support research assistants, participant compensation, data collection, software, books, scholarly resources, supplies, research related non-conference travel, or other legitimate costs subject to University Guidelines.
  5. PI(s) and research assistant salaries will be paid through the University payroll, subject to applicable tax withholdings and in accordance with the University's standard payroll schedule, or on a reimbursement basis, or a combination thereof.
  6. Other costs will be ordered through or reimbursed by the Ethics Center.

Qualifications

  1. Applicant(s) must be tenured or tenure-track faculty member of Arts & Sciences. Non-tenured faculty members are eligible to apply after their first reappointment.
  2. Priority will be given to junior faculty working on projects beyond their dissertation.
  3. Training, experience, or prior publication or research in ethical, social justice, or health equity areas is desired.

  • Applications should include project title;  current or potential funding sources; project aims and impact; methods and materials; products and outcomes, current stage of research to date and timeline;  and detailed budget and budget justification.

Post-Award Requirements

  • Award funds must be expensed by September 15, 2022
  • A summary of the grant activity is due October 1, 2022
  • Awardees will present their work as part of the Ethics & Society Webinar Series in Spring 2023 and a profile of the faculty member and project summary will be posted on the The Ethics and Society Blog
