COVID-19 Temporary Emergency Leave Guidelines

Guidelines for Administrators and Staff (in effect until further notice)

Pursuant to New York State Paid Sick Leave for a COVID-19-related Quarantine, Fordham University created a Temporary Emergency Leave Guidelines to accommodate employees under a mandatory or precautionary order of quarantine or isolation.

  • Employees will be entitled to 14 calendar days (including weekends and holidays, if applicable) of job protected paid sick leave if they or a minor dependent child are under a mandatory or precautionary order of quarantine or isolation issued by any government entity duly authorized to issue such order due to COVID-19. For any additional occurrences that may occur outside of Fordham University, the employee will be required to access their own paid time off (sick, vacation or personal) to quarantine or isolate for 14 days or the time off will be unpaid. The Office of Human Resources Management will require supporting documentation for all occurrences to self-quarantine or self-isolation.
  • If an employee is directed by the Office of Human Resources Management, a Public Safety representative, or the University’s occupational health partner to self-isolate or self-quarantine for a period of 14 calendar days, they will continue to receive their regular pay.
  • If an employee works for an employer in addition to Fordham University, and has been directed to self-isolate or self-quarantine due to possible exposure at their non-Fordham workplace, Fordham will pay their regular pay for the first self-isolation or self-quarantine occurrence only. Employees will be required to access their own paid time off (sick, vacation or personal) for any further non-Fordham self-isolation or self-quarantine occurrences. The Office of Human Resources Management will require supporting documentation for all occurrences to self-quarantine or self-isolation.
  • If an employee travels a) to a state which New York State requires its residents to self-isolate or self-quarantine upon return, or b) internationally per CDC guidelines, the employee will be required to self-isolate or self-quarantine, for 14 calendar days. The University will require the employee to use paid time off. If paid time off is unavailable, the employee will not be paid for the period of self-isolation or self-quarantine. Faculty members who must self-isolate or self-quarantine should notice the Office of the Provost and contact the Office of Human Resources Management for further guidance.

If the department determines that an employee is able to work by remote access or other means while in self-quarantine or self-isolation, they will be permitted to do so and will be expected to work their normal workday. All requests to work remotely while on self-quarantine or self-isolation need to be authorized by the department.
