Curriculum and Program Structure

Professor and students in classroomThe 36-credit curriculum is supported by high-quality materials, including lecture presentations, course textbooks, comprehensive syllabi, and access to open-source software for hands-on coursework and practical experience. These materials have been developed by respected academics as well as informatics professionals who are experienced practitioners.

Hours, credit requirements, and mode of delivery
The program may be completed in three semesters of full-time study or three to six semesters of part-time study. Courses are offered on Mondays and Fridays, with an online or in-person practicum once per week. The Master of Science in Applied Health Informatics requires the completion of eight courses of four credits each and a capstone project of four credits, for a total of 36 credits. Program requirements are distributed as follows:

  • These three courses, each carrying four credits, provide students with a complete overview of the field of health informatics and detailed practical insight into two key topics that underpin the field—the modeling of clinical information and the implementation of electronic health records.

  • Students are required to take a total of 20 credits drawn from a combination of the elective courses below:

    • The Business of Health Informatics
    • Engineering Clinical Information Systems
    • Healthcare Integration
    • Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
    • Analysis and Reporting in Healthcare
    • Special Topics in Health Informatics
    • Applied Project or Research Project
  • Students must complete a thesis paper or an applied project for four credits.

Advanced Certificate in Applied Health Informatics

The Advanced Certificate in Applied Health Informatics provides students who already possess an understanding of the core concepts and skills of applied health informatics with a course of study that focuses on the core concepts that underpin the discipline, together with practical experience and independent project work. It also gives an opportunity for those who start the Master of Science in Applied Health Informatics to opt for the advanced certificate should they be unable to complete the full master’s program.

Students who complete 16 credits from the following courses are eligible for the Advanced Certificate in Applied Health Informatics:
