May 31 Welcome to Families from Dean Rodgers

Welcome to Families from the Office of the Dean of Students
Dear Fordham Students and Families,

Congratulations and welcome to our Fordham Family. As Dean of Students at Rose Hill, I am delighted that your student will be joining us at the Jesuit University of New York.

Though we just celebrated Commencement here in the Bronx, we are already preparing for your and your student’s arrival. This includes planning—for and with our students and our partners across the University—the Fordham experience outside the classroom. This mission-driven complement to the academic core is in many ways the “sixth class” in which our students are enrolled here at Rose Hill—the experience through which we make good on our mission to educate people for others. Generations of students cherish this intentional and inclusive community experience in part because they have—with a bit of help and guidance from us—built it themselves. Our orientation staff and all of us in Student Life look forward to sharing this innovative and distinctively Jesuit approach to education with you at our upcoming orientation events.

More on these events is included in this email, but I know that students and families also have a host of nuts and bolts questions as they prepare to enter this next phase of life and education. It is particularly important that students continuously check their newly-issued Fordham email to avoid missing next steps, deadlines, announcements, and opportunities over the summer.

As Dean of Students, I ask for your help in encouraging our new students to reach out to the offices here in the student life area with any questions and as they learn how to navigate their new University and its helpful and friendly staff and offices:

RESIDENTIAL LIFE for housing, move-in, and other concerns for residents:resliferh@fordham.edu/718.817.3080

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT for orientation, opening, and commuters:
[email protected]/718.817.4339
[email protected]/718.817.4368
and [email protected]/718.817.4339

DEAN of STUDENTS for general concerns and questions, who to call, referrals to Fordham services, adjustment to college life, and any other challenges (including mental health-related questions):
[email protected]/718.817.4755

As a fellow parent however, I am certainly aware that students can lose track of important deadlines and requirements during busy times. Should family members need assistance or have any questions about our work, services, or mission, we will of course remain only an email or phone call away. To help, I will also be compiling our communications in one place through the summer at our Information for Parents and Families page for your convenience. Especially for emergencies or serious concerns, however: please call us, if only to seek discreet advice or support.

Meanwhile, our students and staff—from orientation to housing—will be back in touch as multiple orientation events approach. First up will be tomorrow—Thursday, June 1—for a helpful question and answer webinar event.

After that, the next of our events will be our optional Summer Orientation Programs, followed on Thursday, August 10, by our traditional Commuter Barbecue, and then our customary slate of programs at opening and move-in day on Sunday, August 27.  Opening day is carefully designed for families as well as the new class. Please take a look at last year’s Opening Day Family Schedule for a sense of what’s in store. For those whose students plan to move in early for athletics, Global Transitions, Urban Plunge, or other activities, please consider returning for these traditional opening milestone events if time and travel permit.

Of course, goodbyes at the end of the day on Sunday’s opening are not the end of the story: we hope that you plan to return for Family Weekend (Friday, October 27, to Sunday, October 29).

All of us in the offices with which I work are truly excited to see you on tomorrow’s webinar and on campus beginning at the summer orientation programs. Again, congratulations.

Sincerely,

Christopher Rodgers

Dear New Students and Families,

On behalf of the Orientation team, congratulations on your acceptance.

Welcome to our community and the family of thinkers, leaders, and learners at Fordham, the Jesuit University of New York. To assist with the transition to college, we will be sharing additional resources throughout the summer to make the transition easier and a seamless experience.

We are pleased to invite all incoming undergraduate Rose Hill students and families to attend one of three optional Summer Orientation Programs (SOPs) this year. SOPs are an introduction to college life at our Rose Hill campus, provide useful information for parents and families to help you prepare for your first year, and are a great opportunity to meet classmates, students, faculty, and staff.

FIRST YEAR FORMATION PROGRAM

  • Want to connect with staff, student leaders, and your fellow classmates and get an inside look at all that your career at Fordham has to offer? Be on the lookout for how to register for our First Year Formation (FYF) seminar, a weekly one-hour course designed to assist with your transition to college life and Fordham University. Held in the Fall semester, these small, discussion-based classes do not add to your academic workload but will actually help you succeed. Each is taught by experienced staff assisted by student leaders  and will help you start your college career off on the right foot.
  • FYF focuses on engagement and belonging, fostering in-depth discussion on our University’s mission and Jesuit heritage, introducing participants to  leadership, service, and involvement opportunities at Fordham, and will be your guide to your new home here in New York City. We will soon be sending more information about the FYF program, so keep checking your Fordham email.

If you have any questions about Orientation or would like to learn more about the First Year Formation Seminar, please email us at [email protected], or call us at 718‑817‑4339.

We look forward to seeing you at Rose Hill soon!

May 12 Email to Students for Housing Selection

Fordham University has a proud 182 year history of approaching learning in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. Learning occurs inside and outside the classroom: our students are challenged to be women and men for others, to unite heart and mind and to develop– through inquiry, community, and practice– lifelong habits of authenticity, conscience, character, and intellect.

For Fordham, life on campus is a part of your education and first-year Rose Hill students choose from a variety of residence halls and experiences, each with its own character and style. All of the communities we create for and with our students share a commitment to participation and engagement - academics balanced with personal growth,  intentionally-designed and led by dedicated professional and undergraduate staff to support our institution’s mission.

WHERE SHOULD I LIVE ON CAMPUS?: ROSE HILL HOUSING OPTIONS

Residence Halls and Integrated Learning Communities
First-year students who choose to live on campus can expect to enjoy a very special experience. Our Rose Hill campus offers a wide variety of residence halls, each with its own unique architecture, ambience, focus, and style.

The Fordham Residential Life online brochure — Discover Your Home — contains detailed information about all available housing locations, programs, and options. Please become familiar with the contents of this brochure as it will help guide your choices.

Traditional Residential Halls
The Rose Hill campus has four traditional residence halls open to first-year students. These offer a more conventional and general experience versus the greater focus of other programs:

  - Alumni Court South
  - Faber Hall
  - Loschert Hall
  - Martyrs' Court LaLande & Goupil
- Tierney Hall

Integrated Learning Communities
In addition to our traditional halls, first-year students may choose to apply to one of the three “Integrated Learning Communities” (ILCs). These are on-campus residence halls that are intentionally designed to integrate Fordham’s renowned intellectual tradition with the traditional experience-based learning of life in a campus residential community. Each community has its own specific concentration, goals, architecture, amenities, and style; each opens its doors to members of the incoming class who are committed to a particular focus. Take a look here at our three ILCs. Do you feel yourself being called?

- Science Integrated Learning Community (SILC) - Housed in Martyrs' Court Jogues Residential College
- Queen’s Court Residential College -   Housed in Queen's Court
- Loyola Hall Residential College and the Manresa Scholars Program - Housed in Loyola Hall Residential College
