The Interior

Above: This large window, constiting of five lancets (a tall narrow window with a rounded arch) on the west side above the organ was installed in 1967. The organ is the largest church pipe organ in New York.

The interior of St. Bartholomew's Church has Byzantine features and decoration (Domes, mosaics, rounded arches). As such it is interesting to note that Mr. Goodhue did not intend to have stained glass in the windows.  The clear glass originally in the windows was replaced by stained glass. The  wheel window (left) was replaced with stained glass in 1943.

Although not illustrated here, the window found in the south transept area of the church, is a representation of the Sanctus, a canticle (a passage of scripture that is used for song and chanting).
