Sale & Transfer of an Estate, 704
To the holy and venerable father in Christ, Rigobert, Lord Abbot of the monastery of
Sithiu, I, Eodbert, the vendor, have determined of my own free will to sell to you by
undisputed right, and I have so sold to you, to transfer to you, and I have so
transferred, all my portion in the place called Rumlingen, in the district of Therouanne.
This unsought and sorrowful bequest came from my late son Chardebert and I transfer it to
you, whole and entire, with its houses, lands, buildings, serfs, woods, meadows, pastures,
lakes, streams, movables and immovables, mills, flocks, and shepherds. I also transfer to
you whatever my wife held there, which, at her request, was bequeathed to our son at her
death. The abbot himself, or the majority of the monks, shall receive this property and
rule over it in full right and dominion from this day henceforward. Wherefore we have
accepted from you at a price which pleased us well, and upon which we were agreed, 1500
solidi in gold and silver. And from this day the abbot or the majority of the monks shall
have free and full power in every way to have, hold, give, sell, exchange, or do any other
thing with the property. But if any one, which we cannot believe will be the case, if we
ourselves or any of our heirs, or any one on behalf of our heirs, or any person
whatsoever, presume to deny or infringe upon the rights conveyed by this sale, which I of
my own free will have asked to be put into writing, and if such person be not warned by me
or my heirs, then let us pay double as much money, and let the other person pay as much,
as the property is worth at the time. And let his pleas go unheard in the courts. And this
sale shall remain fixed and inviolable for all time. Done at the monastery at Sithiu on
the sixteenth day of the month of May, in the tenth year of the reign of our most glorious
king, Childebert.
