  • As the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic reverberate today, systemic barriers to quality healthcare continue to disproportionately affect BIPOC/AAPI patient populations. This class will highlight cultural considerations when working with terminally ill patients in minority communities, with a particular focus on working with Asians and Asian Americans. Delivering culturally-sensitive palliative care requires thoughtful reflection of practitioners’ lived experiences that directly shape the clinical space. As social workers have an important responsibility to examine their own social locations, interactive exercises will be incorporated in this discussion. Strategies to identify common themes such as filial piety, the role of the family, and spirituality as prominent cultural values that influence end-of-life care in Asian/Asian American populations.

    2. Explore and honor their own social locations as important factors that shape the worker-patient dyad
    3. Identify at least three culturally sensitive strategies to conduct more culturally attuned palliative care assessments and interventions
