Caring for those who are seriously ill exposes us to a multitude of losses and invites us to support those who suffer. This interactive workshop will explore the impact of how our work environment, cultural background, and personal history of past losses influence our understanding and expression of suffering. Despite the cumulative effect this has on healthcare teams, few settings offer a safe place to process these powerful feelings, and few clinicians have had formal training in coping with grief. Social workers may find that they are expected to provide comfort to both families and colleagues without access to care for themselves. Strategies to address these complex and interconnected issues will be explored, with tools and resources provided.
CLASS OUTLINE
- Exploration of how our work environment, culture and past experiences of loss impact our personal and professional lives (60 minutes)
- Explore self-care strategies and possible structural changes needed to better support our ability to empathically process suffering (both our own and others) – 60 minutes
- Summary and Resources -15 minutes
- Discussion and Questions – 15 minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Social workers who take this class will be able to:
- Identify the intersection of how our cumulative exposure to suffering impacts us (both personally and professionally).
- Describe strategies to support ourselves, patients, families, and colleagues in processing suffering.
- Identify steps we might take to support the safe expression of grief within our settings.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Health social workers who care for seriously ill people.
