Core Competency 3

This competency ensures that PFF participants receive close mentoring from a senior educator.

PFF participants will:

• Be observed and/or mentored by a senior educator.
• Discuss pedagogical strategies with a senior educator.

Core Competency 3 can be completed by the following departmental-level programming:

• Biology: Working one year as a Senior Teaching Assistant
• Classics: Being observed by a faculty member
• Economics: Passing ECON7995: Teaching Introductory Economics
• English: Passing ENGL5999: Pedagogical Theory and Practicum I and ENGL6004: Pedagogy Theory and Practicum II
• History: Completing a Mentored Teaching Semester
• Philosophy: Being observed by a faculty member
• Psychology: Completing Teaching Supervision
• Theology: Completing the teaching mentorship

Core Competency 3 can also be met by:

• Jesuit Pedagogy Seminar: the Jesuit Pedagogy Seminar is a year-long interdisciplinary seminar that offers advanced graduate student teachers the chance to look in depth at the 500-year-old traditions of Jesuit pedagogy. The Jesuit pedagogy seminar also includes a mentorship experience, in which participants are mentored by a faculty member outside their own discipline. 
• Writing Center: Students working in the Writing Center are mentored by senior educators and receive extensive training. Students can therefore fulfill Core Competency 3 by working in the Writing Center for at least two semesters.
• HASTAC Scholarship: PFF participants can complete Core Competency 3 by becoming a Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC) Scholar. The HASTAC Scholar Program is an interdisciplinary, international network of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, as well as librarians, archivists, museum curators, publishers, and IT specialists.
