Fordham Men’s Crew Has Highly Successful 2013 Fall Season

Following the Head of West Point Fordham competed at the Head of the Housatonic, then the Head of the Charles, and most recently the Head of the Schuylkill. At the Head of the Housatonic the Men’s Varsity 8 won gold in the Non-IRA Collegiate 8 event. That 8 broke into two fours and about 30 minutes later raced again earning a silver medal in the Collegiate Non-IRA 4 event. Fordham’s second place four posted the fourth fastest overall time between both the Collegiate IRA and Non-IRA entries.

For the Head of the Charles this year, Fordham had two four entries. One entry was in the Collegiate 4+ event on Saturday and the other in the Lightweight 4 event on Sunday. The most notable performance was that of the Lightweight 4 that finished in 3rd place. The Fordham Men clocked in at 17:45.5, ten seconds ahead of fourth place Club D'aviron De Boucherville and behind UPenn at 17:33.1 and Yale at 17:35.1. Other entries in the event included (in order): Yale B, New York Athletic Club, MSOE, Lincoln Park BC, University of Minnesota, Georgetown, Argonaut Boat Club, VCU, Undine Barge Club, Bowdoin, Wentworth IT, UConn, and Harvard University. Fordham’s Collegiate 4+ also had a significant improvement on last year’s finish placing twelfth overall in a field of 38 entries. Both entries are guaranteed for next year.

The head of the Schuylkill was another weekend of success. The Fordham Lightweights earned gold medals in the Lightweight 8 event 50 seconds ahead of the University of Delaware entry. With only two entries in the Lightweight event, it was run simultaneously with the Champ Heavyweight Eight event. The Fordham Lights posted the fifth fastest time in the Champ event. Earlier in the day the Fordham varsity four took second place in the College Open Fours event. Out of the 34 entries, Fordham finished as the top college entry finishing second only to the Penn Athletic Club.

The fall head racing season is over for Fordham, but the final race of the fall season will take place this weekend at the Fall Metropolitan Championships at the Orchard Beach Lagoon in Pelham, NY. The Fall Mets is a 2,000 meter sprint race attended by many New York City area colleges and universities.

Law & Order: SVU Episode May 1, 2013

On Monday, April 8, Fordham University's Crew took part in an episode of Law & Order: SVU, scheduled to air on May 1, 2013. The scene is a group of prep school rowers preparing to launch their shells. "This is not the first time something like this has happened," said Head Coach Ted Bonanno. "Throughout the last forty years that I have been coaching in New York City, I've had several crews filmed in various commercials, TV shows, and movies. One of the perks about being a student-athlete in New York is that something like this happens all the time."

The team shot on location at Rye Beach throughout the morning with the cast of the show. Once the scene was completed they had the opportunity to spend time with both Kelli Giddish and Danny Pino (Detectives Amanda Rollins and Nick Amaro). Another Fordham student, Jeff O'Donnell GSB '14, acted in the episode and joined the team as well.
