Rose Hill Campus Resident Assistant Position

The Resident Assistant position at Fordham University at Rose Hill is an integral part of the operation of eleven on and off-campus residential communities and the Office of Residential Life at Rose Hill. The Resident Assistant position is a ten-month position beginning in August and ending in May. The specific dates are based on the academic year calendar. 

Below are the core responsibilities of the Resident Assistant role. This is not an exact or exhaustive list of responsibilities, but rather an overview of the position.

Community Development & Support

Presence & Approachability

  • RAs will act as a positive role model and mentor for residents.
  • RAs will ensure that they are approachable through their demeanor, attitude, and overall presentation of themselves.
  • Outside commitments should not impact one’s ability to complete core responsibilities of the Resident Assistant position, including training and other mandatory duties/dates as assigned and communicated.

Programming & Cultural Engagement

  • RAs will meet all programming requirements as determined by the Office of Residential Life and their supervisor(s).
  • RAs will invest significant time, effort, and energy in creating meaningful and educational programs for their residents.
  • RAs will create opportunities for residents to engage with and learn about other cultures, ways of life, and diverse communities.
  • RAs will create bulletin boards and door decorations that are fun, educational, and well-put-together.
  • RAs will support RHA through promotion and participation in events.

Community Building & Support

  • RAs will actively create and maintain an inclusive and caring community that celebrates everyone’s identities.
  • RAs will intentionally help residents connect with one another.
  • RAs will utilize and share available resources and knowledge to support residents.
  • RAs will help residents develop a sense of responsibility as community members and neighbors.
  • RAs will hold floor meetings, as needed, to share important information and address community concerns.

Safety, Wellbeing & Policy Education

Safety & Wellbeing

  • RAs will show care and concern for the holistic well-being and health of their residents.
  • RAs will proactively check in on residents during tough times or when they face challenges.
  • RAs will promptly report and address health and safety concerns in and around the building and notify their supervisor(s).
  • RAs will never put themselves or others in danger or in harm’s way, especially during emergencies.
  • RAs will educate residents on safety and security measures and procedures.

Policy Enforcement & Education

  • RAs will consistently, fairly, and promptly address, document, and/or report incidents of policy violations.
  • RAs will make themselves familiar with and educate residents on University & Residential Life policies.
  • RAs will apply policies consistently and equitably across all residents, regardless of identity, culture, or personal feelings about residents.

Duty & Incident Management

  • RAs will serve in a building wide duty rotation.
  • RAs will follow all emergency procedures and directions from Administrators when responding to crises.
  • RAs will complete duty shifts in their entirety and perform all necessary tasks/responsibilities while on duty, as specified in the RA Duty section of the RA Manual and by their supervisor(s).

Staff & Administrative Responsibility

Communication & Collaboration

  • RAs will complete all paperwork, including proposals and evaluations, correctly and in a timely manner.
  • RAs will appropriately advocate and express the needs and concerns of themselves, their residents, and the staff.
  • RAs will read and respond to messages from the Office of Residential Life and their supervisor(s) in a thorough and timely manner.

Professionalism & Responsibility

  • RAs will exercise good judgment, act responsibly, and represent themselves and the department well at all times.
  • RAs will maintain strict privacy and confidentiality with all sensitive situations and information.
  • RAs will prioritize their responsibilities as an RA, while effectively managing their academic, personal, and other commitments.
  • RAs will exercise good time management skills, including arriving on time to all commitments and attending all staff meetings and training sessions.

Operational & Procedural Reliability

  • RAs will submit and follow up on work orders in a timely manner when noticing building/maintenance issues.
  • RAs will assist with housing operations, including room inspections, openings, closings, and fire drills.
