Gerry Byrne

Doctor of Humane Letters

Gerry Byrne has built a life that reflects the best of this University’s Jesuit mission, having lived his Fordham education as a call to leadership, service, and generosity.

A proud graduate of Fordham Prep and Fordham College at Rose Hill, he has carried the lessons of his formation into every chapter of his life: as a Marine Corps officer in Vietnam, as a visionary leader in the media industry, and as an energetic and selfless champion for veterans, students, New Yorkers, and all those called to lives of purpose after service. His leadership has been marked not only by accomplishment but by character, by the joy he brings to others, the loyalty he inspires, and the generosity with which he gives himself to causes larger than his own success.

As vice chairman of Penske Media Corporation, Gerry has helped shape some of the most influential brands in modern media. Yet his legacy is measured just as powerfully by the communities he has strengthened and the people he has lifted up. Through his service to civic and nonprofit organizations, and especially through his founding of Veterans on Campus NYC, he has helped ensure that student veterans receive not only access to higher education but the welcome, support, and dignity they deserve.

His many honors, including the Distinguished Public Service Award, the Navy’s highest civilian honor, testify to a life animated by restless service and deep devotion to others. With humility, good humor, and unmistakable joy, Gerry reminds us that leadership at its best is never merely about achievement. It is about using one’s gifts, influence, and experience to widen the circle of belonging and to serve the common good.

For his dynamic leadership that has not only propelled his career but also enriched the lives of those who served and those in need, we, the President and Trustees of Fordham University, in solemn convocation assembled and in accord with the chartered authority bestowed on us by the Regents of the University of the State of New York, declare Gerry Byrne Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. That he may enjoy all rights and privileges of this, our highest honor, we have issued these letters patent under our hand and the corporate seal of the University on this, the 16th day of May in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twenty-Six.
