  • Professor Elizabeth Maresca is a Clinical Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law and Supervising Attorney of the Federal Tax Clinic. In the Clinic, she supervises law students who provide free legal services to low-income clients in tax controversies against the IRS and New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Professor Maresca has also taught Income Taxation and Lawyering Skills.

    Professor Maresca specializes in federal tax controversy and litigation against the IRS. She regularly advises clients, attorneys, consumer protection advocates and policy makers on the tax issues which arise in consumer matters. She is an expert on tax controversy matters, identity theft, innocent spouse relief and tax issues that arise in debt collection, FDCPA, and foreclosure matters. Prof. Maresca is a contributing author to the tax discussions in the several treaties published by the National Consumer Law Center. She has also published in the areas of ethics in tax practice, tax interest and tax penalties.

    Before joining the faculty, Professor Maresca spent three years working in the tax controversy departments of private sector firms. She also spent over six years as a Trial Attorney for the Internal Revenue Service Office of Chief Counsel. While there, she represented the IRS Commissioner in cases before the United States Tax Court, including several landmark cases, such as Federal National Mortgage Association v. Commissioner and United Parcel Service v. Commissioner.

    Education

    • Professor Maresca received her Juris Doctor and her LLM in Taxation from New York University School of Law.
    • A Fordham graduate, Professor Maresca received her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Fordham College Rose Hill. While at Fordham, she was a 4-year member and Captain of the school's varsity swimming and diving team setting 4 individual and 4 relay school records. Honors received include Dean's List and the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award.
