Mental Health and Medical-Related Re-Entry Process
Students who seek to resume study after an absence, leave, withdrawal, hospitalization or other incident due to mental health and/or medical reasons go through the re-entry process (also outlined in the University Regulations) before resuming classes or returning to university housing. Once the college or school confirms that a student is eligible to resume study, the student is sent instructions on how to proceed. Please read all information under the section below that applies to your situation. Students returning from a Medical Leave of Absence or an extended time away from the university must submit documents by the deadlines under "Returning From a Medical Leave of Absence" section below to be eligible for re-entry for your desired semester.
Students who take a medical leave of absence late in the semester must wait a minimum of one full re-entry cycle before they can begin the re-entry process to return to the University. The deadlines for the mid-semester medical leave are outlined below. For students taking a Medical Leave of Absence on or after:
December 1 (Fall semester) may begin the Re-Entry Process no sooner than the following Summer cycle
May 1 (Spring semester) may begin the Re-Entry Process no sooner than the following Fall cycle
August 1 (Summer semester/break) may begin the Re-Entry Process no sooner than the following Spring cycle
Any student who takes a mid-semester medical leave prior to the above deadline and is interested in returning for the upcoming semester must submit a Letter of Intent within 5 business days of the deadline above.
If you need to request a medical leave of absence, please complete and submit the Medical Leave of Absence Form to your class dean or relevant school staff. Please contact your class dean or relevant school staff for more information about taking a Medical Leave of Absence.
The Re-Entry Team is here to help students in their return to Fordham and to assist in navigating the re-entry process. Please contact the appropriate campus office with any questions or concerns about the re-entry process.
Goals of the Process
The Mental Health and Medical-Related Re-Entry Process is designed to:
- ensure that students are ready to return to classes and/or university housing after an emergency, crisis, hospitalization, unexplained absence, leave of absence (LOA) or withdrawal (WD);
- ensure coordination among separate areas and offices associated with the re-entry process;
- give students and families a clear set of expectations and requirements for re-entry; and
- ensure that Fordham University is adequately prepared to support students as they return to academics and housing.
