Wendy Luftig

Adjunct Professor of Law
Wendy Luftig is a seasoned healthcare attorney with experience in a variety of sectors, including industry, non-profit academic medical centers, government and legal entities. She has an extensive background representing start-up biotechnology companies in legal, regulatory and compliance functions relating to drug development, as well as global pharmaceutical companies, such as Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, where she oversaw a portfolio of legal documentation pertaining to the research enterprise, including the performance of multi-site clinical trials with emphasis on challenging negotiation impasses, intellectual property issues, and privacy law concerns.
Prior to assuming an industry role, Ms. Luftig worked in the Office of Science and Research at NYU Langone Medical Center negotiating transactional agreements with life science companies, private foundations, and governmental entities, such as the NIH and CDC. Earlier in her career, she practiced as a corporate litigator at several major New York firms, including Dewey Ballantine.
Ms. Luftig has a current appointment as a volunteer attorney with the Surrogate Decision-Making Committee of the NYS Department of Health Justice Center, an alternative court system that evaluates individual capacity, reviews legally-authorized surrogate status, and provides determinations on whether medical procedures meet "best interests" standards for individuals who cannot give consent due to physical or mental health limitations.
A former Chair of the Bioethical issues Committee of the New York City Bar Association, Ms. Luftig is a recipient of the 2012 Jeremy Epstein Award for pro bono service for her work representing cancer patients through the Cancer Advocacy Project of the City Bar Justice Center. She has published in the areas of bioethics and organ transplantation, and has provided a legal analysis of the access, cost and quality parameters of the US healthcare system. Since 2015, she has served as an Adjunct Law Professor at Fordham Law School, teaching seminars in Health Care Policy & the Law and The Essentials of Pharmaceutical Law.
Ms. Luftig received her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, has done graduate work in bioethics at Columbia University and holds an undergraduate degree from Hamilton College.
