Recent Work from the Feerick Center

Consumer Advocacy

The Feerick Center recently spearheaded a letter from legal services consumer advocates to Governor Cuomo on the public health risks of the expiration on November 4, 2020 of the provisions tolling statutes of limitation and litigation deadlines under the Executive Order 202.67 and urging their extension.

The Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office (CLARO) is a limited, legal advice program for unrepresented defendants with consumer debt cases in New York City, Westchester, and Buffalo. CLARO Programs operate under the auspices of the New York State Unified Court System’s Office for Justice Initiatives and its Access to Justice Program. CLARO Programs involve partnerships among courts, bar associations, academic institutions, and legal services organizations. In New York City, CLARO Programs operate in all five boroughs – Bronx County Civil Court, New York County Civil Court (Manhattan), Kings County Civil Court (Brooklyn), Queens County Civil Court, and Richmond County Civil Court (Staten Island).

Volunteer lawyers work side-by-side with volunteer law students and other volunteers. Consumer law experts help train volunteers and are available for onsite consultation during weekly clinics, which take place in the courthouses. The Feerick Center for Social Justice administers the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island CLARO Programs.
