Environmental Studies Program
Environmental Studies Program at Fordham
Environmental Studies at Fordham is a sciences and humanities program dedicated to understanding and addressing the world’s most urgent environmental challenges. Students explore climate change, habitat loss, mass species extinction, environmental health, environmental justice, and the creation of sustainable societies through interdisciplinary coursework and hands‑on experience.
A Sciences and Humanities Major Program
-
Environmental Studies students take courses across biology, chemistry, economics, political science, sociology, philosophy, theology, and design. This interdisciplinary foundation allows them to understand environmental issues holistically and develop policy solutions that integrate scientific, political, economic, ethical, and design considerations.
-
Students gain international experience through study abroad programs and fieldwork in locations such as Denmark, South Vietnam, Africa, and Australia. Study-abroad courses may count toward the major or minor, offering global perspectives on environmental challenges and solutions.
-
Students conduct original research through coursework, internships, study abroad, and the senior thesis. The capstone research experience in the major allows students to spend a full year developing an independent project under faculty mentorship, culminating in publication in an online journal format.
-
Students gain professional experience through internships with government agencies, nonprofits, and businesses in New York City and beyond, which integrates directly with coursework and strengthens graduate‑school and employment applications.
