About the Curran Center

Our Goals

We believe the study of Catholicism provides a powerful lens through which to view human experience and the American past and present. Acting on this conviction, our programming aims to:

  • Promote the understanding of Catholic thought and practice
  • Explore Catholicism’s diverse manifestations in American contexts
  • Create opportunities for informed and compassionate engagement with the religious and social issues of our time.

Christine HinzeDirector's Welcome

Greetings from Fordham University’s Curran Center for American Catholic Studies!

At the Curran Center, advancing knowledge of, appreciation for, and engagement with Catholicism in our U.S. context is our academic mission and our great passion.

The Center today carries on the legacy of the generosity of Dr. John and Constance Curran and the vision of our founding director Fr. Mark Massa, SJ, who over a decade ago conceived of an interdisciplinary unit at Fordham dedicated to the historical and contemporary study of this rich and varied faith tradition and its manifold expressions in thought, practices, cultures, in literature and the arts, and engagement with pressing religious and social issues of our day.

Our work at the Center promotes Fordham University’s Catholic, Jesuit mission by cultivating informed and lively engagement with Catholicism among our students and colleagues in the University, within the local and national academy and Church, and among the broader religious community and general public.

Curran Center (CACS) activities include national conferences, public lectures, fora and readings, academic seminars and conversations, the creation and publication of scholarly and imaginative work, undergraduate and graduate courses, and—especially dear to our hearts—an intensive, undergraduate honors concentration in American Catholic Studies.

We are able to do this work because of the great support of Fordham, the Curran family, and many other generous donors and supporters. Thank you for your interest in the Center! We welcome your questions and participation, and hope you will consider helping us secure a bright future for the interdisciplinary study and celebration of “all things Catholic” here at Fordham.
