Caring for Students

Centering students is a core value at Fordham University, something in Jesuit education we call “cura personalis”—or "care for the whole person." For us, that means we don't just look out for your GPA; we are invested in who you become as a person over four years- your emotional, spiritual, and personal growth, too. Your character, in other words. We will be here to support you every step of the way on what will be a transformative experience with you as part of our community.

A community of care

Every student has strengths and challenges, and we lean heavily into student-led support because peers are often the first to notice when a fellow Ram is struggling. We recruit and train student leaders to take an active role in the personal education we provide, to act as "our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers":

  • Resident Assistants & First-year Mentors: Living right alongside students in the residence halls to offer daily guidance.
  • Commuter First-year Mentors and Commuter Assistants: Helping off-campus students seamlessly adapt to college life.
  • Orientation Leaders: Welcoming first-year students and fostering an immediate sense of belonging, teaching each new and transfer student about our community.

How we can support your student

Whether your student needs a casual check-in from a staff member, pastoral counseling through Campus Ministry, or clinical care via Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS), the Deans of Students act as a direct bridge to care.

If your student has a history of emotional or mental health struggles, we encourage you to connect with us or CPS privately before the semester begins so we can ensure a smooth transition. We are always glad to work with families behind the scenes to coordinate confidential support tailored to the specific set of challenges and strengths.

Worried about a student?

We don’t just welcome students into our community—we welcome their families and friends, too. If you are a parent, family member, or friend concerned about a student’s well-being or transition to college life, you are not alone. Our entire campus is designed to be a network of support.
