Professor Christopher Dietrich

Professor Christopher Dietrich serves as the Director of American Studies. He is a historian of U.S. foreign relations who is interested in international oil politics, peacekeeping, human rights, and development. He teaches classes on U.S. foreign relations, oil history, the Cold War, Vietnam, and American Radicalism, among others. His first book is Oil Revolution: Anticolonial Elites, Sovereign Rights, and the Economic Culture of Decolonization (Cambridge University Press, 2017). His second book project, "Our Oil: American Nationalism and Global Oil from World War I to the War on Terror," is under contract with Bloomsbury. He has written articles for Diplomatic History, The International History Review, Humanity, and Itinerario, as well as book chapters for several edited volumes. He is the chair of the 20th Century Politics and Society Seminar at Columbia and the editor of The Wiley Blackwell Companion to the History of U.S. Foreign Relations, Colonial Era to the Present. He likes to spend time with his family and travel.
