Esra Y. Alamiri is a Clinical Teaching Fellow at the Walter Leitner International Human Rights Clinic. She has worked on gender and human rights issues since 2008, with a particular focus on Southwest Asia and North Africa. Alamiri has extensive experience working with UN agencies and international organizations on gender justice and human rights. Her advocacy before UN human rights mechanisms contributed to a recommendation by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women that Kuwait appoint women to the judiciary, a recommendation the State subsequently accepted. She has also contributed to shadow reports submitted to several UN treaty bodies, including the Human Rights Committee, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Committee against Torture, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child, as well as stakeholder reports submitted to the Universal Periodic Review. Alamiri has been affiliated with the Leitner Clinic since 2016. Since 2017, she has developed and co-supervised clinical projects addressing a wide range of international human rights issues, including Syrian women and girl refugees; gender and transitional justice in Yemen; sexual and domestic violence in Kuwait; decriminalization of abortion in Lebanon; conflict-related sexual violence against the Yazidis in Iraq; and the integration of gender perspectives into UN atrocity prevention and early-warning frameworks. Through this work, she has helped build partnerships between the Clinic and UN agencies, NGOs, and governmental and legislative institutions. Before joining Fordham as a Clinical Teaching Fellow, Alamiri served as senior legal counsel, assistant professor of public international law and international criminal law, gender specialist with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and consultant to UN agencies and international organizations. Alamiri received her S.J.D. from Fordham Law in 2024, where her doctoral research focused on gender and genocide, and her LL.M. in International Law and Justice from Fordham in 2017. She earned her LL.B. from Cairo University in 2006. She has been a member of the Kuwait Bar Association since 2007 and is affiliated with the Arab Lawyers Union. Her honors include the Arab Woman of the Year Award in Law (2016) and Fordham Law School’s Archibald R. Murray Public Service Award (2017).
