In his latest book, Reclaiming the Internet: How Big Tech Took Control—and How We Can Take It Back, Professor Olivier Sylvain writes about the legal frameworks on which the internet was built, how free speech claims are used disingenuously by Big Tech companies, and the sometimes harmful effects of social media design on users. The book also offers solutions to mitigate the impact of surveillance, misinformation, and exploitation so we can begin to “reclaim the digital public sphere.”

Doni Bloomfield, Associate Professor of Law                    

Research interests: Innovation law, national security law, AI and biosecurity, export controls.

“We live in a time of fascinating and unsettling technological change and international competition. We need to harness the law—export controls, intellectual property systems, science grants, and more—to steer us toward helpful inventions and away from catastrophe.”

Courtney Cox, Associate Professor of Law                    

Research Interests: Legal automation, online manipulation, copyright, trade secrets.

“Theory and practice are often contrasted, as though they are competing camps. Not so in law and tech. Jurisprudence is directly relevant to legal automation and computational treatments of law. And legal theory provides the tools necessary to understand, articulate, and address harms created by AI and other digital technologies.”

Katherine Hughes, Clinical Associate Professor of Law                    

Research interests: Access to justice, AI in legal education, AI governance and policy in legal practice.

“My engagement with AI reflects my commitment to expanding who has access to legal resources and to encouraging the next generation of lawyers to think critically while giving back to their communities. This work is essential to the profession's integrity and to the clients and communities the profession has long underserved.”

Aniket Kesari, Associate Professor of Law                    

Research Interests: Data science and empirical legal studies, AI law and policy, data privacy and cybersecurity, politics and economics of digital platforms.

“Technology creates new problems within old legal questions: What counts as a valid explanation for an algorithmic decision? How should deterrence work when cybercriminals are difficult to trace? As an empiricist, I’m also especially excited by how AI enables empirical research using text, audio, and video across diverse legal domains.”

Research interests: Data privacy, algorithmic fairness, intellectual property in emerging technologies, internet regulation.

“Technology continuously outpaces the law, creating gray areas where vulnerable populations and independent creators may be exploited. Getting this balance right is critical: we must foster technical innovation while safeguarding privacy, digital rights, and access to justice for those most exposed to algorithmic and data abuse.”

Chinmayi Sharma, Associate Professor of Law                    

Research interests: AI governance and accountability, automated government and the rule of law, open source ecosystems, data privacy and cybersecurity.

“New systems often make life easier by making power harder to see. Law should be impolite enough to ask: Who decides? Who bears the risk? What kinds of human judgment gets automated away? And how do these systems reshape our relationships with each other and institutions?”

“My focus is on the law and political economy of online commercial practices, including artificial intelligence, with a special attention to the asymmetries that typify consumers’ relationship with the providers of online products and services. My main subjects of research are data protection, platform liability, civil rights, and communications law.”
