Tom Norton

Tom Norton is the Executive Director of the Center on Law and Information Policy (CLIP) at Fordham University School of Law. He also teaches courses in Information Privacy Law. His research focuses on privacy and data protection law and policy, as well as legal accountability in software systems. Much of his work is interdisciplinary, combining legal analysis with software engineering and computer science, and much of it is supported by the National Science Foundation. He co-leads a project under the NSF's Designing Accountable Software Systems (DASS) program that examines how lawyers and software engineers can collaborate to build legal accountability into software from the earliest stages of design. He has also contributed to the Usable Privacy Policy Project, an NSF Frontier project that uses crowdsourcing, natural language processing, and machine learning to analyze privacy policies. His scholarship appears in both law and technology publications. Tom earned his JD from Fordham University School of Law, where he served as CLIP's Privacy Fellow from 2014 to 2016. Prior to returning to CLIP as Executive Director, he was an attorney at Arent Fox LLP (now ArentFox Schiff) in New York City. He is admitted to practice in the State of New York and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
