Laurence T. Sorkin is a retired partner in the New York law firm of Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP, where he headed the firm’s antitrust and trade regulation group and practiced for more than 45 years. During that time he represented clients before the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, and state and foreign antitrust authorities, and litigated a wide range of antitrust issues in federal and state courts. His practice included numerous U.S. and multi-jurisdictional investigations of international cartels and related private treble damage litigation, including direct and indirect purchaser class actions and opt-out suits. He also participated in a number of cases dealing with the extraterritorial application of the U.S. antitrust laws, including the Supreme Court’s Empagran case.
In addition to teaching at Fordham Law School, he also teaches at the University of Amsterdam Law School, and he has been a visiting professor at Yale Law School, Católica University School of Law in Lisbon, Portugal, and the University of Freiburg Law School in Freiburg, Germany. He graduated from Brown University in 1964 and Yale Law School in 1967, and received an LLM in 1968 from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he studied as a Fulbright scholar. In 1968-69 he was law clerk to Judge J. Joseph Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He has held various leadership positions in the Antitrust Law Section of the American Bar Association and current serves on the Section’s International Cartel Task Force. He is a member of the advisory board of the Fordham Competition Law Institute and also serves on the advisory board of the Institute for Consumer Antitrust Studies at Loyola University (Chicago)Law School. He has written a book and various articles on antitrust subjects, and spoken at antitrust conferences in the United States and abroad.
