Professor of Law and Bacon-Kilkenny Distinguished Research Scholar

Joseph Fishman is joining Fordham as a professor of law and Bacon-Kilkenny Distinguished Research Scholar. An expert on intellectual property, particularly within the music industry, his recent scholarship has covered legal issues such as the standard for infringing similarity, the role of expert witnesses in music copyright litigation, judges’ definition of musical originality, and trademark issues related to sound recordings. Prior to joining Fordham, he was a professor of law at Vanderbilt Law School as well as a professor in Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music. He joined the academy after practicing law at Jenner & Block in the firm’s content, media, and entertainment group. He earned his AB magna cum laude from Harvard College, his MPhil in musicology from the University of Cambridge, and his JD cum laude from Harvard Law School.
