Invitation to Theatre
Nehprii Amenii (she/her/hers) is a Brooklyn based director, playwright, production designer and puppeteer. She has a passion for personal narratives, puppetry, and grand-scale spectacle. She is known for creating experiences that dismantle the wall between players and audiences, enchant the imagination and inspire new ways of seeing and thinking. She's worked with Penumbra Theatre Company, Pan Asian Repertory, Bread and Puppet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Foundation, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Company, The Eugene O'neill, Virginia Stage Company, The New York PhilHarmonic, and more. Nehprii is a member of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, and the Stage Directors and Choreographer’s Society. She's been the invited U.S. delegate of the Women's Playwright International Conference, South Africa and is recipient of the Lipkin Prize for playwriting. She's been awarded by the International Rotary Club, The Puffin foundation, Manhattan Cultural Council, The Jim Henson Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Most recently, she was selected as one of New Victory Theatre's 2021/22 LabWork's Artist, and again as their 2022/23 Launch Artist. As an educator and curriculum developer for over 20 years, she uses puppetry, multi-media arts and storytelling to mentor teachers and to teach English to newly arrived refugees and immigrants within New York public schools. She has taught at Minneapolis Community and Technical college and has been guest faculty at Sarah Lawrence College, the University of the Western Cape, and the University of Connecticut.
