Mary Ann Bartels, GABELLI ’85, GSAS ’92

Mary Ann Bartels, GABELLI ’85, GSAS ’92, is head of the Research Investment Committee and of exchange traded fund (ETF) strategy for global research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. She is the lead author of The RIC Report, a monthly publication which provides investment themes and actionable ideas for the firm’s clients. With more than 25 years of investment experience, Mary Ann is known for high-quality portfolio strategy and research. She was an Institutional Investor All-America Research-ranked analyst from 2006 to 2011, and she is highly regarded for developing proprietary models for equity pairs trading and for her sector, industry, and stock selection, as well as for her extensive work on hedge funds.

Prior to being appointed to her current role in July 2018, Mary Ann was head of Merrill Lynch wealth management portfolio strategy for the Global Wealth and Investment Management (GWIM) Chief Investment Office, a division of Bank of America Corporation. In this role, she was responsible for contributing to the thought leadership for investment guidance and portfolio strategies for financial advisors and clients. She also served as a GWIM Investment Strategy Committee voting member, responsible for promoting investment policy, guidance, and strategy across Bank of America’s advisory network.

Formerly, she was head of U.S. technical and market analysis at Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research. Mary Ann rejoined Merrill Lynch in 1999, working with the European quantitative strategy team, and became head of global equity trading research strategy in 2001. Prior to this, Mary Ann held portfolio manager positions at Batterymarch in Boston and at Avatar/Zweig Associates in New York.

Mary Ann earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts degree in economics from Fordham University. She serves on several advisory boards, including the Fordham University President’s Council Executive Committee. She is currently based in New York.
