Student Technology Checklist

Fordham IT Back-To-School Checklist

Make sure you’ve got the technology you need before you arrive on campus:

Verify your device can connect to Fordham WiFi

Fordham WiFi only supports 5 GHz wireless. Certain devices only use a 2.4 GHz wireless frequency and will not see the Fordham network. If you are unsure as to whether your device is 5 GHz compatible, please call IT Service Desk, 718-817-3999. If we determine that your laptop or desktop is not compatible we will issue you a free 5 GHz USB adaptor to connect to Fordham WiFi. No workaround exists for phones, tablets, e-readers or gaming systems affected by this issue.

Remove peer-to-peer file sharing programs

Peer-to-peer file sharing programs are prohibited from being installed or run on your computer while you are connected to Fordham’s WiFi.

Bring a USB cable for your personal printer

While there are public printers in all residence halls, labs and libraries, many students elect to bring their own. Your printer will be blocked from connecting to your personal computer via Fordham WiFi. Bring the appropriate USB cable so you can use your personal printer with your computer.

Consider bringing an ethernet cable to connect your game system

Each dorm room is equipped with one ethernet jack per resident. If you prefer maximum connection stability while playing on your Xbox or PlayStation, you may want to bring an ethernet cable to establish a hardwired connection.

Explore academic software

Fordham provides a number of free software programs to support your coursework. Access the following applications via the My Apps page in the portal. Select 'Log in to the Portal' at the top, and authenticate with your Fordham credentials. Once logged in, go to the My Apps page.

  • Microsoft Office
  • Blackboard
  • Unlimited Google Drive storage

Enroll another device with Duo

Duo is Fordham’s multi-factor authentication (MFA) partner. Chances are, you've already set this up. It is highly recommended that you enroll a second device, like a tablet, as a backup. To add another device or change a current device, click "Add a New Device" on the Duo authentication prompt while logging in.

We're here to help you with technology. Fordham IT's website can answer many questions about technology:, or contact Fordham IT Service Desk with your questions: 718-817-3999,, Tech Help page in the portal.
