About:
I am a developmental scientist who takes a strength-based approach to adolescence and young adulthood. I study how sociocultural and political contexts, such as cultural values, family processes, discrimination, digital technologies, campus climate, and the national political climate, and individual processes, such as STEM motivation and emotion regulation, shape mental health, substance use, and adjustment.
My work draws on mixture modeling (including latent profile analysis), structural equation modeling, and longitudinal methods to show not only where young people struggle but also the strengths, coping, and supports that help them thrive. I study young adulthood as it is lived today: online, under political pressure, and in classrooms where not everyone feels they belong. This work focuses on racially, ethnically, and sexually diverse college students and young adults.
I serve as a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Research on Adolescence, review proposals for the Society for Research on Adolescence, and mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers, whose posters appear below.
Methodological Expertise
-
Latent profile analysis of:
- Campus climates among racially and ethnically diverse college students
- Political engagement among LGB young adults
- Antiracist and antisocial online behavior among Asian American students
- Positive and negative risk-taking among emerging adults
- Vaccine hesitancy among Hispanic mothers
(Figure on right from Park & Fisher (2026) "We are not the same: Latent profiles of political engagement among LGB young adults during the 2024 presidential campaign").
-
Mediation and moderated mediation models, for example:
- Psychological pathways from discrimination to alcohol and marijuana use
- Parenting and adolescent courage through self-esteem and emotion regulation
- Race and anti-racist coping as moderators of online racism and college adjustment
-
Following young people across time, for example:
- Change in adolescent psychosocial adjustment during COVID-19
- Pre-election political climate and post-election anxiety among sexual and gender minority young adults

Digital environments and online behavior patterns: Examining patterns of young people’s online engagement, including antisocial and prosocial behaviors, digital coping, and generative AI use, and how individual characteristics and social contexts shape these patterns and their implications for development and well-being.
Diverse developmental pathways: Identifying distinct patterns of strengths, pressures, and supports to understand why young people respond differently to similar challenges and opportunities.
Positive risk-taking and courage: Understanding how adolescents and young adults take meaningful risks that promote growth, and how parenting, culture, motivation, and emotion regulation shape these behaviors.
Family and educational influences: Investigating how parental expectations, teacher and faculty support, and school climates shape academic motivation, identity, persistence, and well-being.
Discrimination, identity, and social inequality: Exploring how racial/ethnic and LGBTQ+ identities intersect with discrimination and sociopolitical contexts to influence adjustment and resilience.
Methodological approaches: Using mixture modeling, including latent profile analysis, to identify distinct developmental patterns; mixed-methods approaches to integrate quantitative, qualitative, and behavioral data; and longitudinal and moderated mediation models to examine developmental pathways and contextual influences.
