How to Register for and Complete the CITI Human Subjects Research Training

  1. Go to citiprogram.org. (If going through a browser and not this link PLEASE BE SURE you type in .org and not .com)
  2. On the top right-hand side of the page, click on Register.
  3. Under Select Your Organization Affiliation, begin typing in Fordham University and Fordham University will appear as a You will need to check the boxes “Agree to Terms of Service and Privacy Policy” and “I affirm I am an affiliate of Fordham University” to continue to Create a CITI Program Account.
  4. Fill in the required personal information.
    • Creation of Username and Password plus Security Question.
    • Gender, Ethnicity and Race information.
    • Indicate if you are interested in the option of receiving Continuing Education credit. This may or may not be applicable to you but not required for completion of Human Subjects Training.
    • Indicate if CITI can contact you later regarding participation in research surveys.
    • Complete the required information about Language Preference, Institutional email address, Gender, Highest Degree, Role in Human Subjects Research, Office Phone and which course you plan to See more information about course selection below.
  5. Select Curriculum If this is your first time taking the CITI course, you will need to choose one of the Basic Human Subjects options under Question #1.

The options for the Basic Human Subjects course are:

  • Biomedical Researchers Investigators  
  • Social & Behavioral Research Investigators This course should be selected by all faculty, staff and graduate students
  • IRB Members - this course is only for those that are on the IRB committee
  • Students Conducting No More Than Minimal Risk Research This course should be taken by undergraduate students
  • Research with data or laboratory specimens only

If you have already taken a Basic Human Subjects Course and it has expired, you should choose a Refresher Course option under Question #2.

The options for the Refresher courses are:

  • Biomedical Researchers Investigators
  • Social & Behavioral Research Investigators This course should be selected by all faculty, staff and graduate students
  • IRB Members - This course is only for those that are on the IRB committee
  • Students Conducting No More Than Minimal Risk Research This course should be taken by undergraduate students.
  • Research with data or laboratory specimens only.

****All of the remaining questions in this section relate to other courses you may choose to take in addition to the Basic or Refresher course, but none of these optional courses are required to apply to the Institutional Review Board. You may skip to the end of the page. ***

  1. Click Complete Registration and then Finalize Registration on the next

The course(s) you have chosen should now appear on the next page. You may click on a course and begin the modules.

Additional Notes:

  • If you would like to take additional course(s) in the future, you can click “Add a Course or Update Learner Groups” and choose the additional course(s) you wish to take.
  • You do not have to complete the course in one You can complete one or more modules at a time then sign out. Whenever you are ready to continue simply sign in again.
  • Once you have completed all of the modules in a course, you will see a completion certificate which you can download and save for your own records. Mentor IRB is synced with the CITI program and will automatically upload your CITI completion certificate.
  • Course completions are good for four years. After that, you will need to take a refresher Your expiration date is indicated on your completion certificate or by logging into CITI under your account.
