Advising for Arts and Sciences Undergraduates
Academic Advising
Throughout your time here in the Arts and Sciences, your advisors partner with you to explore your academic, career, and life goals, as well as help identify the courses, enrichment activities, engagement opportunities, and resources best suited to working towards those goals. You will have an academic advisor assigned through the dean’s office even before your arrival extending into your sophomore year. Afterwards you will continue to have a dedicated advisor through the dean’s office as well as a faculty major advisor in your declared major(s) and minor(s). Our students benefit from having diverse and varied perspectives from different advisors who are available to support them in distinct ways. It’s the best of both worlds!
In keeping with the Jesuit spirit of cura personalis, we believe the development and care of your whole self is vital to thriving academically. Academic advisors also collaborate with other areas across Fordham on your behalf to ensure that you have a rich and well-rounded academic experience.
Your advisors will focus on:
- Your academic progress, course registration and exploring your interest areas.
- Preparing you for major declaration, study abroad programs, undergraduate research, internships, and all other opportunities you will receive at Fordham.
- Strategies for achieving academic success and remedies to any academic concerns.
- Providing support for selection and completion of major coursework, expertise for making post-graduation plans (graduate study and employment), as well as professional development like getting involved in research.
- Last but not least, your well-being and the joy of getting to know you.

Pre-professional Advising
Fordham undergraduate study in arts and sciences offers specialized advising for students interested in different paths after college.
The below programs collaborate with Fordham's graduate schools to offer eligible students the opportunity to start earning a professional degree (e.g. MA, MSW, MS) while still in undergraduate college. In addition, students who wish to prepare for specific professional careers can pursue select pre-professional programs. These programs provide the necessary grounding in a specific field to prepare the student to pursue further study. Each program has faculty advisers who provide counseling and guidance.
